Adding Aromatherapy to Your Ironing Experience

Scent is a proven mood-booster. Ironing, even with a steam generator iron, tends to be a chore that isn’t all that fun.

Adding the power of scent to this chore can help improve the experience considerably.

How to make scented ironing water

To make your own scented ironing water, you’ll need the following:

  • a clean, empty spray bottle
  • distilled or purified water
  • essential oil of your choice (lavender, vanilla, citrus, mint, etc.)

Fill the spray bottle with distilled or purified water. Then, add a few drops of essential oil. Be careful not to add too much. Essential oils are highly concentrated so you only need a few drops.

The exact number of drops you should use will depend on the size of your bottle. For 32 ounces of water, you would use around 5-6 drops of essential oil.

For a much smaller bottle, you would only need 1-2 drops. Mix by stirring or shaking vigorously so that the scent is diffused throughout the water.

How to use scented ironing water

Simply spray a light mist of the scented water over the fabric before ironing as normal. Breathe deep and enjoy the aroma as you relax into the meditative repetition of ironing.

Can’t I just put the scented water into the iron?

Since you are filling your steam generator iron with water to create steam, it seems like you might as well just put the scented water in there. However, essential oils, even in incredibly low doses, could potentially harm your steam generator iron.

For this reason, it is not advised to use scented water in the iron itself. It’s always smart to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the use and care of your iron. This will help to extend the life of the iron.

A good iron, whether an expensive model or an affordable steam generator iron, is an investment so you want to do everything you can to make sure it lasts.

Won’t oil stain my clothing?

That is a natural question. After oil, oil and grease are notorious stainers. The key is the amount of oil you are using. When one drop of oil is diffused into a large amount of water, the oil concentration is so minute that it will not stain your clothing.

The scent will be pressed into your clothing but there won’t be any kind of stain or grease mark. It is really important, however, not to go overboard with the oil. If you add too many drops of oil, you might start to see some small staining.

Can I use perfume instead?

It’s possible, though it will still be absolutely vital to only use a very small amount. Even though you can use perfume, essential oils are a better choice. They are more natural.

Many essential oils also have antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. They tend to have pleasing scents but not overpowering ones.

How to choose a scent

You may have a go-to favourite scent, so you don’t have to even think about it. If you’re not sure which scent to use, you can consider what the research shows. Different scents tend to trigger different feelings and responses.

  • Lavender, vanilla, rose, and jasmine tends to be relaxing.
  • Mint, rosemary, citrus, and cinnamon tend to be invigorating and energizing.

How do you want to feel? Think about both how you want to feel when ironing and later when you are wearing the clothing.

The scent won’t be really strong in the clothing later, but it will linger and the scent will continue to have an effect.
